How to Style a Crochet Bikini (and What to Wear Under It)
The one thing to know first
Crochet is an open, textured knit, so a crochet bikini is not the same as a solid swimsuit. Most are lined at the bust and briefs, but the weave itself can be sheer when wet. If a set isn't lined, wear a plain bikini underneath in a matching or contrasting tone — this is normal and part of the look, not a flaw.
Building the beach outfit
The classic combination is crochet bikini + a throw-on cover-up or a flowing skirt. Because the bikini already has a lot of texture, keep the cover-up simple — a plain kaftan or a loose linen shirt lets the crochet be the hero. Add a straw bag and flat sandals and you have the whole boho-beach look.
Colours that work
Natural and earthy tones — cream, tan, terracotta, sage — read as the most "handmade boho" and flatter most skin tones in beach light. Bright single colours pop in photos. If you're layering a solid bikini underneath, a tonal match keeps it subtle; a contrast makes it a design feature.
From beach to bar
A crochet bikini top can double as a going-out top over high-waisted jeans or a maxi skirt once you're off the sand — that's part of the value. Add a cover-up you can unbutton and a few pieces of gold jewellery and the same set carries you from midday swim to sunset drinks.
Care so it lasts the summer
Rinse crochet swimwear in cool fresh water after every swim — salt and chlorine are hard on the fibres — and lay it flat to dry rather than wringing or hanging, which stretches the weave. Our full care guide has the details.
